A request to play the piano by prospective residents created the first challenge for Care Home Manager Carol Preston before Heath Lodge even opened.
“Prior to the home opening, I was asked by a number of prospective residents if we had a Piano, and if not, were we going to get one? One morning whilst getting ready for work I watched a news item about an adopt a piano scheme as there were so many piano’s available, free to a good home as part of this scheme.”
Despite the interest in the scheme, they were unable to find a piano close to Holt. The search continued until Carol saw a notice on a local notice board. She Instantly made contact and was introduced to the owner of the Piano, Charlotte: who loved the idea of the Piano adoption.
Charlotte grew up with a great love of music, which remains today. This came from her dad who is a very talented musician, and lead her to look for a piano for the family. As Charlotte explains “I was scrolling through Facebook and noticed that my village hall was putting a piano up for free. Me being somewhat impulsive told my husband that I just needed this beautiful piano.”
Charlotte used to play at school and wanted to relearn and give her three young children a chance to learn. They got the piano and have played and looked after it for two years. Charlotte continues “Sadly, the time has come that I no longer have the space. I could not think of a better place for the piano to go and be enjoyed! So, thank you very much for giving the ‘old gal’ a new meaning!” So ‘old gal’ has pride of place in one of the Heath Lodge lounges.
One of the residents was a Piano Teacher and was delighted to hear they now have a Piano. she had asked if her daughter can bring in some of her music sheets so we are hoping that we will soon be treated to the tinkling sounds of the piano. Carol concludes “We will look after the ‘old gal’, and it will bring many hours of pleasure filling the home with music, love and laughter. We are also planning on asking the residents to give the ‘old gal’ a new name with a naming ceremony at a later date.”
