Coronation House Celebrates Joyce, Thetford's National Treasure
Joyce is a beloved figure in Thetford, renowned for her remarkable teaching career. Beginning her journey in the autumn of 1959, she dedicated 30 years to educating young minds until her retirement in 1989. Joyce taught a variety of subjects at the primary school, but her true passion was Geography. She particularly enjoyed the school trips, with France being a favourite destination.
In the early days, Thetford had only a few schools, so Joyce also taught her daughter, Jane. Maintaining professionalism, she insisted on being called Mrs. Doubleday from 9 am to 3 pm, ensuring no favouritism by having Jane’s work marked by other teachers.
When asked about the best part of being a teacher, Joyce’s response was heartfelt: watching children grow in knowledge and become the best they could be. Her impact is evident as she is frequently approached by former students who fondly remember her as an exceptional primary school teacher.
Upon Joyce's arrival at Coronation House, it was heartwarming to see people recognizing her. During a recent visit from local children, several mums recalled Joyce's wonderful teaching.
Coronation House is proud to celebrate Joyce's contribution to education and the lasting positive influence she has had on countless lives. Thank you, Joyce, for your dedicated service to teaching.
