Christine Barker's life has been marked by creativity, entrepreneurship, and a passion for art. Her journey began at the age of 15 when she started working in a small factory, learning the art of sewing. Over the years, she honed her skills and, at the age of 17, decided to embark on an entrepreneurial venture, making and selling skirts.
Chris's entrepreneurial spirit led her to Pontefract and Wakefield markets, where she showcased her handmade skirts. Despite a slow start, her business flourished, and she gained a dedicated customer base. For 40 years, from 8 am to 4 pm, Chris dedicated herself to her craft. She even employed a team to assist with sewing and ironing, contributing to the success of her venture.
Chris and George, her husband, welcomed a daughter named Bev into their lives. Bev and her husband embarked on a remarkable journey, running marathons around the world and earning numerous medals. Their global adventures in marathon running, including a recent trip to Japan, became a testament to their dedication and athletic prowess.
Chris's father, an artist with a penchant for drawing and painting ships, had a profound influence on her. After her father's passing, Chris found solace and expression in painting. Using oil paints, she created beautiful reproductions of pictures she admired. Some of her cherished paintings, along with those created by her father, adorned hers and George's room.
Unfortunately, a fall limited Chris's ability to use her right hand, putting a pause on her painting endeavours. Despite this challenge, Chris holds onto the lovely memories of her creative pursuits. Her paintings, a testament to her artistic talent and the bond with her father, serve as a tangible reminder of a life filled with creativity and achievements.
Chris's story at Sid Bailey is a celebration of a life rich in creativity, entrepreneurship, family achievements, and a deep appreciation for the arts. The home honours her journey, acknowledging the resilience and spirit that has defined Christine Barker's remarkable life.
