On Friday 2nd December Broadlands Lodge had their first visit from Friend In Deed.
Friend in Deed are an intergenerational charity working with care home across Norfolk to reduce loneliness and promote kindness. One of their main support services is called ‘Little Visitors’ and this involves babies and toddlers (accompanied by a parent/guardian) visiting older people living in care homes to play games and make friends. Through regular visits, some very special friendships can be formed between care home residents and children/families who live locally. Friend in Deed also works with more than 20 schools to organise school visits, examples of school work being posted to care homes, online quizzes and other one off sessions/activities between schools and care homes. Other activities that Friend in Deed organise, include a monthly care home choir session online, intergenerational pen pal schemes, postal activities, a weekly newsletter and one off events and sessions that help keep all ages connected.
The charity has won various awards including being nationally recognised as the winner of the Great British Care Awards in the category of innovation 2020. The charity aims to make sure that older people remain connected to the wider community, that their emotional needs are met and that they do not suffer from loneliness. The founder of the charity, Kelly Lindsay, says “We must continue to remind older people living in care homes that they are still valued members of our communities. We also need children to learn about kindness, empathy and how to support other people. By bringing together the oldest and youngest members of our communities, very special friendships and connections are created, these connections help reduce the risk of loneliness and create kinder communities.”
One resident commented ‘It was so lovely and different to any activity we have done before, I especially loved meeting all of the babies.’
Here at Broadlands Lodge we encourage our residents to be part of the wonderful community around them, we are proud to be part of the Friend In Deed charity and the incredible work they are doing.
