Coronation House in Thetford is proud to celebrate the remarkable journey of one of its esteemed residents, Jessie, whose courageous service during a pivotal period is about to be honoured by Thetford Fire Service. In 1944, as a determined young woman aged just 17, Jessie tried her luck with the armed forces but was turned away due to her youth. Undeterred by this, she sought out the local Fire Brigade, where her age was thankfully overlooked, allowing her to join their ranks as one of only four females serving full time.
Jessie's role was instrumental during the war, where she supported firefighting efforts in Norwich amidst the bombing raids. This period forms a significant part of her legacy, intertwined with the rich history of Thetford, as the site of the former fire station is now home to the Dad's Army Museum.
Today, Jessie is the last surviving female firefighter from her era at Thetford Fire Service, which is eagerly preparing a special commemoration to honour her inspiring life and contributions. The event promises to be a testament to her bravery and commitment, with the date set to be announced soon. The team at Coronation House feels privileged to share in Jessie’s story, providing a nurturing environment where such histories are cherished.
